CYNTHIA: I'd rather die than have him for a father! My
Dad's dead and you've insulted his memory by
marrying that bastard!
(The MOTHER slaps CYNTHIA hard and she collapses
to the floor.
Blackout.)
SCENE 5:
The sun is shining on the grassy hill and the leaves of the
tree rustle softly as they cast shade over the BOY, dozing
beneath its boughs. A rabbit nestles on his stomach as he
sleeps.
CYNTHIA approaches hesitantly, unsure whether to wake him or
not. She sits quietly beside him, expecting him to wake.
The BOY doesn't stir so she moves about a bit, making a little
noise but still he sleeps on.
CYNTHIA: (softly) I'm back.
(There is still no response and so she prods him
on the shoulder with her finger.)
CYNTHIA: I'm back.
(The BOY wakes and looks up at CYNTHIA and smiles
at her as he strokes the rabbit.)
BOY: Hello again. 'Tis a welcome rousing
To wake to face the substance of thy dreams.
CYNTHIA: (smiles) Were you really dreaming about me?
BOY: Aye, 'tis true, as sure as I live and breathe;
You were astride a pure white Unicorn,
The most noble and virtuous of beasts,
Making its way across a forest stream.
A shining smile adorned your face and blossoms
Filled the air, swirling in patterns traced by
A playful zephyr. And as the Unicorn
Lowered its head to drink its ears stood up
As the wind whispered to listen and the
Trees spoke to you, I remember not what.
CYNTHIA: You must remember.
BOY: I do remember this: it was important.
CYNTHIA: What did they say? Please try to remember.
(The BOY makes a show of trying to remember, then
looks at her and shrugs.)
CYNTHIA: You must remember, it might have been important.
BOY: Oh, that it was but alas, 'tis gone now.
Mayhap had you not woke me quite so soon-
