CYNTHIA: Well what if I need you later? You won't-
BOY: Sweet girl, you will never need me again.
CYNTHIA: How do you know.
BOY: When I die I will take a part of you,
A weak, scared part that knew not what to do.
And you will keep in you a part of me
That will give you strength in your times of need.
You have grown and must release the past.
I am but a remnant of that time
Which you must set behind you and forget.
CYNTHIA: I will never forget you.
BOY: (smiles weakly)
Remember only what is good.
(pause)
Now liberate yourself and let me die.
Go now, and do not e'er try to return
Because there is nothing here for you now.
(The BOY slumps suddenly and CYNTHIA catches him,
she cradles his head in her lap.)
CYNTHIA: I can't. I can't leave you like this. I'll stay
with you to the end. (pause) It's what you would
have done for me.
BOY: So stubborn.
(pause)
Prithee, take my pipes and play me a tune.
I have not the breath left in me to play.
(CYNTHIA reaches into his pocket and takes out his
pipes.)
BOY: Let the music reach down into your heart
And play me one last tune. A farewell tune.
(CYNTHIA puts the pipes to her lips amidst the
growling thunder and howling wind begins to play.
At first the music is rather stilted but after a
few notes begins to flow.
The sound of a gentle rain can be heard.)
BOY: The rain comes again.
(CYNTHIA plays on, the sound of the rain increases
to that of a heavy shower.
The music is haunting and passionately mournful
and as CYNTHIA plays the BOY lies still, his head
cradled in her lap.
The lights fade slowly to blackout, and the tune
ends on a long, low note as the sound of rain fades
and the wind dies.)
