BOY: I am here.

(CYNTHIA wheels around and gasps in shock at the
sight of him. He begins to stagger towards her but begins
to stumble. CYNTHIA recovers from her shock and moves to
catch him as he falls.)

CYNTHIA: You're all wet.

BOY: It has been raining.

CYNTHIA: (noticing the furry ball cradled in his arms) Is
that Cumzen?

BOY: Aye, I spied him as he crossed yonder field,
On his way to pay me one last visit.
He moved slowly, I went to help him hither.
But I myself am weak and was too late;
Alas our little friend no longer lives.

CYNTHIA: (almost in tears) This can't be happening - not
here. What's going on?

(The BOY, supported by CYNTHIA manages to struggle
to the top of the hill and collapses against the tree.
CYNTHIA sits and holds him.)

BOY: This place is dying. You should not have come.

CYNTHIA: (crying softly) I needed to see you again. To
thank you - to tell you I was okay - that I
made it.

BOY: This I knew. There was no need to thank me.
Knowing that you have won is thanks enough.

CYNTHIA: I didn't even know your name.

BOY: But you knew me. What is there in a name?
You should leave now, for I am dying too.

CYNTHIA: No. I won't leave you. You can't die, you can't.
I won't let you. Tell me what I can do to save
you and I'll do it.

BOY: There is nothing. All things come to an end.
Without death there is no life. I must die.

CYNTHIA: But I still need you. You said -

BOY: No. You no longer need me.
