BOY: It is not too late for you to return,
Sometimes a broken promise may be mended.
CYNTHIA: I've been really selfish. I can't leave her there
- with him. I'd sooner die than let him do to her
what he did to me. She's only a little girl...She
needs me. (pause) I have to go back.
BOY: If you must go then you must go.
CYNTHIA: I've been a coward, I can't stay here. I'm gonna
go back and fight.
BOY: 'Tis not fair to yourself to say a coward.
The brave must all draw courage from somewhere.
Only the foolish force a losing fight,
The wise retreat, regroup and fight to win.
CYNTHIA: (stands) I'm gonna miss you.
BOY: Fare you well my brave and pretty lady.
Pray you, remember the words of the trees.
(CYNTHIA wraps her arms around him and he hugs her
back as she gives him a kiss on the lips.)
CYNTHIA: I only hope I can get back. That it's not too
late.
(Fade to blackout.)
ACT V:
SCENE 1:
The hospital. BECKY is asleep on her MOTHER's lap, as they
both sit beside CYNTHIA's bed. The MOTHER's head is tilted
forward and to one side as she dozes, still holding CYNTHIA's
hand.
Suddenly the MOTHER jerks awake, startling BECKY.
BECKY: What?
MOTHER: She squeezed my hand.
BECKY: You were probably dreaming.
MOTHER: No, no, I wasn't dreaming. She squeezed my hand.
(BECKY jumps off her MOTHER's lap and rushes
around to the other side of the bed, taking up
CYNTHIA's other hand.)
BECKY: You're coming back, aren't you Cyn? Squeeze my
hand too. I knew you wouldn't leave me.
