The BOY leans close to help her and the

blackout.)

SCENE 7:

The hospital. As before, CYNTHIA, lies comatose in the bed
but now the bed is decorated with cards and flowers and the
like.

The DOCTOR is checking things and is just leaving when the
MOTHER, looking drawn, enters with BECKY.

DOCTOR: Hi. Still no change I'm afraid.

(The MOTHER nods absently and sighs as the DOCTOR
exits. She goes and sits in the chair by the bed
and holds CYNTHIA's hand and talks quietly to her
while BECKY sticky tapes another card to the bed
frame.)

MOTHER: We're back again sweetheart...Becky and I are
really missing you...You're friends are too -
Charlene's still sending you fresh flowers every
few days...Becky's just stuck a card up that's
from one of your teachers-

BECKY: It's from Mr Benson.

(The MOTHER looks up as JO hesitantly enters.)

JO: Hi. I'm Jo, I met you that time-

MOTHER: Hello Jo, I remember you.

JO: Oh, I wasn't sure if you would. (pause) I hope
you don't mind me coming to visit Cynthia,
Charlene told me where she was.

MOTHER: Of course not, don't be silly. I think it's good
for her to have people who care about her near
her.

JO: (smiles) Hi, Becky.

BECKY: Hi.

MOTHER: Cynthia's never really talked to me about you,
except, I think, a couple of times when she said
you beat her in a test or assignment. I didn't
know you were close.

JO: I don't know that we're close, but we share things
in common. I mean, of course I like her - I'm a
friend - and I respect her.
