(CYNTHIA looks at him, smiling and sits up.)
BOY: Pray, tell me, do not keep me in suspense.
Your speechless grinning mouth does make me feel
Like one, who, surrounded by mirthful friends,
Is not made privy to the joke they share.
Please taunt me no longer with your silence.
CYNTHIA: I'm staying this time. (pause) I'm going to stay
here with you forever.
(The BOY is silent, thoughtful.)
CYNTHIA: Well, aren't you happy?
BOY: In truth, I know not.
CYNTHIA: Don't you want me to stay?
BOY: I want only what is the best for you.
'Tis all I ever wanted, all I will.
CYNTHIA: What's best for me is what I want. And I want to
stay.
BOY: Then stay for now, mayhap you'll change your mind.
CYNTHIA: Not a chance of that. My mind's made up. This is
my home now. (standing) Come on, don't be so
gloom and doomy, I want to go exploring. I
want to see a Unicorn. Pick up Cumzen and show me
around.
BOY: (picks up CUMZEN and stands)
Your cheerful demeanour is infectious;
My doubts are cast aside, let's have some fun.
Come follow me, we'll find that Unicorn.
(CYNTHIA lets out an excited squeal of delight as
they exit through the fields.
Blackout.)
SCENE 5:
CYNTHIA lies comatose in a hospital bed. She is connected to
various monitors and an intravenous drip. A DOCTOR is
adjusting the monitors and noting things down on a clipboard.
The MOTHER sits in a chair beside the bed, holding her hand
and crying softly. BECKY stands beside her mother.
BECKY: She won't die, will she mum?
