BOY: I'm happy you come to me but come now
Let us not think on things that make us sad
But revel in this day that we've been given.
Always more beautiful than yesterday
Where but hours before we played and painted
The time the colours of our thoughts and actions.
There's always something amiss with paintings
Of yesterday and so after each comes
Tomorrow, its canvas clean and bursting
With opportunity. With your fresh, new
Brushstrokes you have the power to compose
The images of your dreams.

CYNTHIA: That's easy for you to say. Other people paint my
days.

BOY: (laughs gently)
We all paint our own. Although it is true
That some let others guide their brush.

CYNTHIA: Maybe some can't help it.

BOY: 'Tis true it is oftimes hard to remain
In control of one's own brush -
(he notices her frown and smiles)
Please darken not your fair features with a scowl.
I but speak my thoughts with the intent to
Bring you cheer. If it is the opposite
They do then I will be silent. Or better,
Let my music be my voice.
(he takes up his pipes)
Come, friend, smooth thy brow, and lie 'gainst the
Earth.
Feast your senses as with my pipes I will
Accompany the orchestra of this day:
The beams of sunshine, the whistling of the wind
As it wafts through the grass, the sweet, sweet
Scent of flowers, and the rustle of leaves,
The soft, ever-changing clouds in the sky
And the songs of the birds, all play for you.
I will join them with my pipes as God conducts.

(CYNTHIA leans back against the hill, taking in all
that surrounds them as the BOY puts his pipes to his
lips and begins to play a beautiful tune that blends
perfectly with the subtle songs of nature and
delivers everything he promised.

CYNTHIA relaxes and a smile creases her face.
Sudden blackout.)

SCENE 2:

CYNTHIA is lying on her back on a bed, she is wearing her
school uniform. The covers of the bed are messed up as if
someone was bouncing on it. Her eyes are open and unblinking
but she seems unconscious.

CYNTHIA's younger sister, BECKY, is bending over her, trying
to rouse her by shaking her gently.
