JO: It might be wrong.
CYNTHIA: I don't think so. Oh my God, what am I gonna do?
JO: An abortion?
CYNTHIA: Oh my God.
JO: (pause) Come on, I'll walk you home.
(JO puts her arm around CYNTHIA and walks her
offstage. CYNTHIA moves in a dazy, exhausted sort
of shuffle.)
ACT IV:
SCENE 1:
CYNTHIA's home. CYNTHIA and JO enter and JO puts her school
bag down. CYNTHIA stands still, holding her bag, with an
expressionless face and a distant look in her eyes.
JO takes her bag from her hands and places it on the floor as
CYNTHIA's MOTHER enters.
MOTHER: Where the hell have you been? You were supposed
to be home more than an hour ago. (notices JO)
Oh, hello.
JO: Hi. (pause) I'm Jo.
MOTHER: I'm still waiting for an explanation, Cynthia.
(BECKY enters, eating a sandwich, she pauses to
take in the situation and then sits in a lounge
chair with a book.)
JO: I think you should tell her.
MOTHER: Tell me what?
CYNTHIA: (quietly) Mum...
(BECKY looks up from her book and JO steps aside a
little as the MOTHER goes up to CYNTHIA and
looks
h er in the eyes.)
MOTHER: What's wrong?
CYNTHIA: (struggling to stay in control) Everything. I'm
pregnant.
(The MOTHER sighs and puts her hand to her mouth,
pausing to think.)
MOTHER: Becky, take your book upstairs and read it in
your room.
