CYNTHIA: (fighting back more tears) I...I had another...
(pause) fight with my step father.
BOY: (taking her hand)
Don't fight your tears when they strain for release.
And strain they will as a river when dammed;
Just as rivers, tears must be free to flow.
(CYNTHIA lets go and bursts into tears. The BOY
puts an arm around her as she cries on his
shoulder.)
BOY: Let go dear friend and cry 'til your heart’s
content;
No sweeter rain has fallen on my shoulder,
For those tears of pain so much cloud your eyes
That they hide the sparkle I know lives there.
When your tears are spent once more will they shine
To give light to those who in darkness dwell.
And then will your beautiful smile return
And sorrows they will all be forgotten.
That being if I don't drown before you stop.
CYNTHIA: (through teary laughter) I'm sorry.
BOY: Pray, don't apologise. I merely jest.
CYNTHIA: I know...I'm okay now. Thanks for giving me your
shoulder to cry on.
BOY: The pleasure was mine for it makes me sad
To see you so upset and miserable
When I know that underneath there is a soul
That fed a little tender love will give
Warmth and happiness to those it meets.
CYNTHIA: I'm sorry I'm always miserable and down when I come
to you.
BOY: It matters not to me because I know
What lies beneath your blanket of despair.
If I can lift even just a corner
And let a little light into the room
Which hides your smile and if you smile at me
Then it gives me pleasure to know that I
Have in some small way shared my joy with you.
CYNTHIA: (smiles at him) You have today and you always do.
No matter how bad I feel when I come to you you
always make me feel better. I just wish that one
day I'll surprise you and be happy when I come.
BOY: 'Tis true, that would be a surprise.
CYNTHIA: You must think I'm horribly selfish but I can't help it. I've got no-one else to go to.
