ACT 2:
SCENE 1:
The same bedroom setting. The darkness gradually fades as the
light brightens. It is morning.
A clock/radio has gone off but BECKY is still sound asleep and
CYNTHIA still lies in the same position, staring unblinkingly
at the ceiling.
There is a rap on the door.
MOTHER: (offstage) Come on sleepy heads, time to get up or
you'll be late for school.
(Neither girl stirs and there is the sound of the
MOTHER trying to open the door.)
MOTHER: (offstage) You two! What have you done to this
door? (banging) Cynthia! Becky!
BECKY: (waking) What?
MOTHER: (offstage) Becky, what's going on? Open the door.
BECKY: (climbing out of bed) Wait a minute. (she moves
over to CYNTHIA, panicked to see that she is still
not conscious, shakes her) Cyn, wake up, it's
morning.
MOTHER: (offstage) Becky, what's going on in there? Open
this door now!
BECKY: I'm coming! (shakes her harder) Mum's at the
door, wake up. Cynthia!
(With the repeated shaking, CYNTHIA begins to
stir, blinks and turns to look at BECKY.)
CYNTHIA: Becky. What's happening?
BECKY: Get up. Mum's at the door.
MOTHER: (offstage) Becky, Cynthia, if you don't open this
door now there's going to be big trouble.
(CYNTHIA sits up and fixes her clothes while BECKY
turns her attention to moving the furniture,
scraping the bed quickly out of the way first and
then pushing the chest of drawers noisily out of
the way.)
MOTHER: (offstage) What the hell-
(With the drawers out of the way Becky opens the
door and the MOTHER all but flies into the room as
BECKY stands back sheepishly.)
