STEPFATHER: I know you're awake, Becky. You
just keep lying there and think about all the things that I'm
gonna do to you if you ever talk about this to
anyone. And remember that it's all gonna be worse
than you imagine.
(Small sobs start to come from Becky's bed and her
little body quivers.
The STEPFATHER snorts in satisfaction and exits,
the sound of his footsteps fading as he leaves.
The room is in complete darkness as he shuts the
door.
The sobs continue for a few more seconds and then
subside.
There is a pause and then BECKY sticks her head
out from the covers and peers around the room.
Satisfied that it is safe she climbs out of bed
and moves to the door, opens it a crack and looks
out. Then she closes it, turns on a lamp and
moves to a chest of drawers. She pulls it away
from its setting and pushes it towards the door.
It takes some effort but she manages to move it
hard up against the door. Then she goes back to
her bed, begins to climb in and then pauses for
second thoughts. She gets off the bed and begins
to pull it to the door also. Eventually pushing
it up against the dresser to make a rather
formidable barrier against the door. This done
she moves slowly over to CYNTHIA's bed where
CYNTHIA's unconscious form lies still but for the
slow rise and fall of her breathing. BECKY stands
by the head of the bed.)
BECKY: It's okay now. You can come back. (There is no
response, CYNTHIA's unseeing eyes stare at the
ceiling) Cyn, I made it safe for you. (pause,
nothing) If I go back to bed, you'll come back by
morning won't you? Please?
(BECKY leans over and gives CYNTHIA a kiss on the
forehead before switching off the lamp and
climbing back into bed.
Blackout.)
