BOY: Earned or not, love can be freely given.
Everyone always does the best they can,
Some are weak, some strong, who is good, who bad?
Judge not others lest you yourself be judged
And which of us can say "I've done no wrong"?
CYNTHIA: I think I'll have to think about that. You know
what else I think? I think you make me think too
much.
BOY: (realizing) I've not yet introduced you to my
friend.
CYNTHIA: You mean that cute little rabbit? What's its
name?
BOY: I call him "Cumzen" for he comes'n'goes.
CYNTHIA: Like me.
BOY: Like you.
CYNTHIA: (laughs, as she strokes CUMZEN gently) Hello
little Cumzen. Can I hold him for a while?
BOY: You can hold him until he wants to go.
(He hands CUMZEN to CYNTHIA and she cradles the
rabbit in her arms. The BOY takes up his pipes
and begins to play a soft, lilting tune. CYNTHIA
leans back against the tree, CUMZEN in her lap.)
CYNTHIA: I feel sleepy.
(The BOY plays on and CYNTHIA's eyes close and her
head tilts to one side as she falls into a doze.
Fade to black.)
SCENE 6:
The house. CYNTHIA has been lifted off the floor into a
lounge chair and her MOTHER is sponging her forehead with a
wet cloth. BECKY stands by nervously, looking on.
BECKY: Will I call an ambulance, Mummy?
MOTHER: What honey? Oh, no, no. She'll be alright.
She's just fainted, she'll-
BECKY: But you hit her. Why did you hit her?
MOTHER: Because she was saying some very bad things. I
shouldn't have hit her but I lost my temper.
BECKY: You must have hit her really hard.
